Practicing mindfulness throughout the day is one of the first habits you should work on developing because it will have positive effects in all areas of your life. By being mindful, you will enjoy your day-to-day a lot more, you will become more in tune with your needs and emotions, and you will start to enjoy the present moment.
Do you wake up on Friday wondering where the heck your week went? Do you look back at the year and wonder what you did this year?
Time goes by SO quickly and unfortunately, there’s no way to stop time (trust me, I’ve tried). However, the goos news is that there is a way to SLOW down time! Amazing, right?!
I’m not even joking when I say that practicing mindfulness throughout the day is an easy and quick way to slow down time because you are developing a habit of awareness of simple moments in your life and taking time to appreciate and soak in every day. Doesn’t that sound lovely?!
Create opportunities throughout the day to be mindful and bring yourself back in the moment. It doesn’t have to take a lot of effort but once you start shifting the idea that mindfulness can only be done through yoga or meditation, you will realize that there are many moments in the day where you can be mindful.
[bctt tweet=”Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. It starts with simply being aware of the NOW and appreciating the moment for what it is” username=”seppyforlove”]
What is mindfulness
To put it simply, mindfulness is being aware of how you’re feeling physically and emotionally, being aware of your surroundings and being in the moment rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future.
You’re in touch with yourself and what’s going on around you. This allows you to appreciate every moment for what it is without expectations.
[bctt tweet=” Mindfulness allows you to appreciate every moment for what it is, without expectations” username=”seppyforlove”]
Why is it important
When you are consciously stopping to smell the roses (literally and metaphorically speaking) you are creating moments for yourself throughout the day to take in your surroundings and really your LIFE!
What better way to enjoy life by observing it and appreciating and taking it in so that you can soak in the memories?
Practicing mindfulness is an amazing way to enjoy life and bring yourself back in the moment so that you can be present in the moment instead of living the past or the future. This will also make you feel more relaxed and grateful because you won’t be constantly on the go.
[bctt tweet=”Stop living in the past or in the future. Live in the NOW. Practice mindfulness!” username=”seppyforlove”]
And being mindful doesn’t have to be complicated. Like any other habit, you have to remind yourself that it’s something you want to do and with practice, it can become second nature.
Mindfulness practice # 1 | Focus on your breath
At this point, you might be sick of hearing me talk about breathing because you’re probably thinking, duh, we need to breath to live.
Yes, I know. But I’m talking about mindful and conscious breathing. It’s not about the thousands of breaths that we take throughout the day but it’s about deep, cleansing and calming breaths.
I love starting my day by taking a few deep inhales, holding my breath and slowly exhaling. I also do this during the day, to keep calm or to calm myself back down.
[bctt tweet=”Practice mindfulness right now : breathe in and breathe out slowly 5 times. GO!” username=”seppyforlove”]
There is a physical reaction when you consciously slow down your breath. You are giving more oxygen to your brain and you are slowing down your heart rate. This is the most simple and more powerful tool that you NEED to incorporate in your life. I can’t emphasize it enough. There’s a reason why I always include in my Bullet journal habits tracker and that’s because it was an immediate effect on your body.
Mindfulness practice # 2 | Eliminate distractions
Are you guilty of walking and texting? Or working while you eat your lunch at your desk? We’re all guilty of trying to be more efficient with our time and even though I’m the first to tell you that there are simple ways you can be more productive during the day, I think it’s also important to slow down and start learning again how to do one task at a time.
We have become so used to doing a million things at the same time. I sometimes feel like a clown juggling a plate on my head, fireballs in my head while twirling a hoola hoop around my waist (that’s actually a pretty funny visual HA!).
There are times where I NEED to put away the distractions so that I can focus on the task at hand. If I’m working on a blogpost, I sometimes won’t even listen to music and I’ll just focus on writing or editing.
Doing this will help me focus on one thing alone and to be able to do it well and to pay attention to the details and what I’m trying to accomplish.
Mindfulness practice # 3 | Observe your surroundings
Another great way to bring yourself back in the moment and be mindful of the present moment is to observe your surroundings.
Take in the sights, the people, the smells. Observe the energy around you, the colours.
This is a way to be mindful on a basic level because once you are able to bring yourself back in the moment by observing ‘easy’ things around you, you will start to be more aware with what you’re doing on the inside as well. This is like a muscle that you need to train. You have to start easy and then build your capacity.
Mindfulness practice # 4 | Be with your thoughts
After a long day at work where the phone is constantly ringing or I have co-workers asking me questions and you’re surrounded by people, I love coming home and just enjoying the quiet.
I enjoy the silence but this allows me to be with my thoughts. To think about my day, about my workout, how I was feeling. I get stuff done around the house while being in the present moment with my thoughts and it’s a relief.
[bctt tweet=”Mindfulness practice # 4 : Learn how to simply be with your thoughts. Listen to what your brain has to say (it might be interesting!)” username=”seppyforlove”]
Because I tend to be go-go-go throughout the day, this gives me the space to be mindful about how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking and how the day affected me. If I give myself the mental and physical space to observe my thoughts and feelings then I can determine what I need that evening. Do I need to take my energy out and organize something? Do I need to just sit on the couch and watch a movie and tune out? Or do I need to go to my office and get work done because I’m feeling inspired and excited?
Mindfulness practice # 5 | Reflect while doing easy tasks
A big part of personal development is to observe your actions, your emotions and your progress. Was there a particular situation that day where you reacted negatively and you’re not sure why? Is there something on your mind that’s making you feel anxious?
Take advantage of moments where you’re doing dishes or the laundry, or doing chores around the house to reflect so that you can figure out why you feel a certain way or why you reacted in a particular way to a situation.
[bctt tweet=”Mindfulness practice # 5 : Reflect throughout the day and check in with how you are feeling, especially while doing menial tasks ” username=”seppyforlove”]
This will help you understand yourself better and might help you handle the situation differently the next time something like that happens.
Mindfulness practice # 6 | Get back to nature
There is something soothing and calming about nature. A walk through a park, the forest, or by the beach will do wonders with your mood and well-being.
If that’s not accessible to you, just being outside, getting some UV rays, being in fresh air will still have a positive effects on you.
I know that this isn’t always possible but I like to get some fresh air whenever I can during a work day (and by fresh I mean… “fresh” because I’m in the middle the city where there are tons of cars haha you take what you can get I guess!).
Self-Love Takeaway
Life is too short – love and appreciate every moment of it. Life is made up of simple moments throughout the day, so make sure you aren’t missing them by being mindful of yourself, your surroundings and your experiences so that you can appreciate what your life.

Loving these practical mindfulness tips. Silence is so important sometimes, in fact, I can only work in silence – no music, podcasts, nothing.
I also love the tips 3-4, you’re so right, being with your own thoughts and frequent reflection are necessary for personal development as well as handling issues and anxiety.
And last – the observe your surroundings tip is so interesting and useful on 2 different levels. First, yes, it actually feels good. I love sitting down in a café and watching people and the whole city. But also, it can be quite eye-opening, because often when I look around all I see are people looking at and playing with their phones – in restaurants, meetings, alone or with friends. And it makes me want to be even more mindful with my phone habits because I see how sad this tech obsession is.

Thank you Viktoria <3
I really want to be more mindful about my phone habits too because I'm guilty of being on it WAY too much and I'm noticing that I can't do one thing at a time so I need to re-learn how to just walk without looking at my phone every five seconds.. it's terrible...

I am trying to teach myself to be more mindful. It started a few months ago when I was (and still am) trying to fix my relationship with food…practicing mindful eating, recognizing when you’re hungry or full, etc. I never really thought about being mindful the rest of my day, though! Now I’m trying to get more in touch with myself, practice positivity and gratitude. This post helped a lot!! Thanks <3

I love this post Seppy! Lately I’ve been focusing on being more mindful (which has caused me to be pretty absent on social media but that’s ok for now lol), so I enjoyed these simple tips. I really resonated with coming home from work and just enjoying the silence and peace by myself. I’m talking to people almost all day on some days at work, and as an introvert, that’s EXHAUSTING. So I love coming home and mindfully doing things like drinking tea, just being with my thoughts, and journaling. It gets me ready to take on the next day. I do need to work on eliminating distractions and focusing on one thing at a time though when it comes to both my day job and my blog. I tend to think I can tackle everything at once and I’m learning that doesn’t always go very well lol.

Thanks DEE!!!!! I’m glad to hear you’re being more mindful instead of being on social media all the time (I’m still guilty of that…)
Being an introvert and working around people IS exhausting OMG! (I sound so anti-social haha)

Thank you for this post, Seppy! I’ve been struggling with mindfulness lately, as I keep looking to the future and worrying about the future… when I should be present in every way. Needed these reminders. Definitely one of my favorite posts of yours so far!

Great blog post! I love that you described mindfulness as a muscle that you need to train. That is such a great visual and so accurate. Like working out and eventually feeling your muscles become stronger; regular practice of mindfulness will also give noticeable results. Many nuggets of wisdom in this post.

I love this! I definitely need to work on being mindful throughout the day. Some of these things I already do, but others I need to work on.
