In fact, most people struggle with following through and sticking to their goals. And there are many reasons for that, which I won’t get into in this post, but to stick to your goals, you have to first make sure that you set the RIGHT goals.

So if you struggle with sticking to your goals, and you feel like you keep on falling off the bandwagon and failing, then here are 6 tips on how to stick to your goals so that you can finally achieve them.
Tip 1 | Have a Strong “Why”
I mentioned this briefly before – the foundation of sticking to your goals is to set the RIGHT goals.
Which means that you need that you need set inspired goals, where you have a better understanding of your motivations and what you’re trying to create in your life.
Inspired goals give you clarity of vision for your life, how you’re trying to feel consistently, and who you want to be.
Because when you understand your why, when you understand the real reason why you want something, whether it’s a new purse or you want to lose weight, it will become easier to find the motivation to stick to your goals and to follow through on your plan.
Your strong “why” behind your inspired goals will be driving force behind you following through and sticking to your goals.
Tip 2 | Be Clear on Your Actions
When you have a clear vision for what you want to achieve and what you are trying to create, this will make it a lot easier to clarify the steps the you need to take to where you want to be.
When you have a strong why, and a clear vision for your inspired goals, then the actions you need to take will be easy to figure out so that you can easily stick to your goals and follow through.
When you know exactly what you need to be doing on a daily and weekly basis, then you have less excuses to NOT stick to it.
And this includes the actions you need to take but also the habits and mindset that you need to cultivate.
When you have a clear understand of the impact your actions and thoughts have on the outcome of achieving your goals, it will become easier to remind yourself to stick to it.
For example, if you understand the impact that lack of sleep has on the quality of your workout, your ability to eat mindfully, and your body’s ability to shed the weight, then you are more likely to stick to your evening routine to get to bed at a reasonable hour so that you can do all the things that you need to be doing to achieve your goals.
Tip 3 | Track
To stick to your goals, you MUST track your progress and your efforts.
Having an easy and simple tracking mechanism is one of the key components of sticking to your goals because you will have concrete results and information in front of you to be able to assess your progress and make sure that you’re doing enough to achieve your goals.
Tracking is a great way to help you stick to your goals because you will also see your streaks, which will motivate you to keep going and not break the streak.
For example, if you are trying to learn a new language, and you’ve been practicing and doing your exercises every day for the last 10 days, then seeing that streak will make you want to keep going and stick to it and continue because it fills you with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Tip 4 | Be Realistic with Your Expectations
If you want to stick to your goals, it’s also very important to be realistic with your expectations of what you can accomplish in a day and in a week, without underestimating how much you can accomplish in a month or a year, if you stick to your plan.
Your inspired goals must be realistic but challenging.
They must be realistic for your lifestyle, schedule and personality, while also being challenging enough that they get you out of your comfort zone to help you learn and grow.
When you set realistic expectations, it becomes easier to stick to your goals because you will feel fulfilled when you’re able to accomplish your daily and weekly goals, and this will keep you motivated.
Tip 5 | Accountability
If you don’t stick to your plan and to your goals, who will you answer to? Who will keep you accountable and help you stay motivated?
Who will call you out when you’re making excuses for why you’re not doing something? And who will help you figure out a better plan if something is not working and you’re unable to stick to it?
Will it be yourself? A friend? A family member? A coach?
Whoever it is, you have to accountable to someone to stick to your goals.

You have to be clear on what you need to do within a certain amount of time so that you can stick to your plan and just keep at it.
And that requires you to be accountable to someone.
There are different elements of accountability – you have to trust the person and you must value and respect their opinion.
In turn, they must also be respectful of you and your goals, without passing judgment if you don’t do something.
Tip 6 | The Reward
Another fun but also important way to stick to your goals is to find a reward.
How will you reward sticking to a plan for a week, a month, a year?
Keep in mind that the reward has to be proportional to the effort. You shouldn’t plan an expensive shopping spree after sticking to your goal for one day. That’s not proportional.
The reward also has to be reasonable to the goal. For example, your reward for exercising and eating healthy for a month can’t be eating a really unhealthy meal.
Another great tip for how to find a suitable reward is to realize that the reward doesn’t have to be something that you buy but it can be an experience or a feeling.
For example, if you exercises all week and ate healthily, then a reasonable and proportional reward would be to plan a fun (but healthy) meal at home, followed by a relaxing bath to ease your muscles.
