There’s a lot of power and wisdom in learning from someone else’s life journey. In this blog post, I’m sharing with you 10 powerful and inspiring lessons from 2019, so that you can learn from my experiences and apply them in your life.
For those of you that have been following my blog and reading my newsletter, you know that 2019 has been a tumultuous year, to say the least.
And my journey is not over yet.
I find that when I feel down or confused about why something is happening, it helps me to take a step back and try and see the situation from a different angle.
Because when you take a step back and try to look at the bigger picture and try and see what you can learn from a situation and how you’ve grown from it, you are empowering yourself. You are taking the time to reflect on your life and your experiences to take away from them the things that matter.
You might have been hurt or had a sh*t time, or someone might have done something to you that you can’t forgive. But as long as you take the time and give yourself the gift of self-reflection (because yes, it’s a gift…to work on yourself and make sure you are growing and learning all the time), then you will be okay.
Your challenges will be a blessing. And you will become a better version of yourself throughout it all.
So here are the biggest lessons that I’ve learned in 2019. And I would strongly encourage you to take 20-30 minutes to do the same thing for yourself. Sit down and reflect on your year to see what you have learned – about yourself, about the world, and about you want and what your dream life looks like.

LESSON # 1 | Rely on yourself
Having a support system is important and a basic human need. However, learn the first thing you should learn is to rely on yourself. You need to know how to take care of yourself first and foremost because imagine one day, you have no one around you – what will you do? How will you know how to manage anything, if you’re used to getting the help from people around you?
Don’t get me wrong, get the support that you need if you really need it, because we all need someone to pick us up sometimes.

But make sure that you know how to rely on yourself because no one can change you or help you if you don’t help yourself. No one is going to be with you 24 hours per day, telling you what you need to be doing to feel happier.
No one, but yourself, is in your head, feeding your thoughts and emotions. So learn how to take care of yourself and rely on yourself to feel okay.
LESSON # 2 | Ask for help
Even though you need to rely on yourself, you also need to know when to ask for help and support.
Particularly if you’re struggling, don’t wait. Ask for the help! There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. We all need the help sometimes. As strong or resourceful as you might be, life can get hard and we can’t always do it on our own.

Know your limits and before it gets too hard, ask for the help so that you can be surrounded and so that you can get the help that you need to get through something.
LESSON # 3 | Build good habits
Your habits will determine the quality of your life. And I’m talking about physical habits like exercising and eating healthy, as well as emotional habits like your mindset and how you think about things.

The stronger your habits are, the more balanced and well-rounded you will feel. And if you go through a challenging time, you will realize even more how important your habits are to help sustain you and get you through those moments.
Because if you have a strong foundation, then when things get rocky, you will be able to stand stronger and remind more stable than if you didn’t have healthy habits to fall back on.
LESSON # 4 | Learn how to rest
I have to admit that this has always been a hard one for me, but I’m slowly learning.
You have to know when to stop, and how to stop.
Life is hectic, and we are constantly on-the-go. If we don’t learn how to stop once in a while to take a breather and to take care of ourselves, then we will eventually run out of steam and crash.

Trust me, I’ve been there.
Learn how to rest and to really shut off your brain and to give yourself the time and space to relax.
The more time you give yourself, the more energy you will have in the long-run to give back to yourself and to your life to be able to live a full life and to achieve your goals to be able to create the life that you’ve always dreamt of.
LESSON # 5 | Find your passion
I know that this might overwhelm some of you, but hear me out.
What do you love doing? What makes you happy?
Do more of those things.
The more you invest the time and energy in yourself, in doing the things that you love, the more you will feed your heart and the more energy you will have in your body because you will feel happier and more relaxed.
Even though I wish for you to find your passion in your life, start with doing more of the things that you love doing, and then reflect on why you love those things.
With time, you will slowly start to understand yourself more and learn what truly sets your heart on fire and how you can do more of it with time.
LESSON # 6 | Understand yourself
Do you regularly take the time to understand yourself, do exercises like self-reflection? Or make the time to read self-help books or listen to self-help podcasts?
If there’s one thing that I hope you take away from this blog post is to make more time for yourself to understand yourself.
When you know who you are, how you think, how you react to things, why you feel a certain way, what your emotional triggers etc… you will feel so much more empowered and will be able to take better control over yourself and your life.
Why?
Because you will know yourself. And you will know how to take care of yourself, and what you like and don’t like, and what you want in life, and what you need to do to change a bad habit for example.
Knowledge is power. And if you want to create a life that you love, then you must understand yourself to be able to build that life, one step at a time.
LESSON # 7 | Find happiness in the smallest things
What does happiness mean to you? Going back to lesson 6, if you know yourself, then you know what are the things that make you happy.
And when you understand what makes you happy, then you will be able to find more happiness in your life. Because when you realize that happiness is actually the smallest things and the smallest moments, you will start to see how much happiness you already have in your life and you can choose to focus on it so that it can continuously grow.
Because happiness is truly about the small moments.
LESSON # 8 | Work on your communication
Are you able to explain your thoughts and emotions clearly? And what about your internal dialogue – what does it sound like? Is it cluttered and confusing? Or are you able to be clear and honest with yourself about your thoughts and emotions?
Learn how to communicate more effectively and clearly, and you will feel SO much better.
Communication is a skill, which means that it can be learned. So take the time to improve your communication, whether we’re talking about how you communicate with others or how you communicate with yourself.
LESSON # 9 | Always put things in perspective
Yes, life can be hard. But technically, it could be harder.
Always try to put your situation or your challenges in perspective and you will see that it’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be.

Because if you learn how to always put things in perspective, you will learn how to appreciate what you have, to see that life is always going to be full of challenges. And no matter what is going on, it could be worse, and you need to learn how to be grateful for what you have instead of focusing on what you don’t have.
LESSON # 10 | Be grateful for what you have
Continuing on lesson 9, be grateful for what you already have because really, things could always be worse.
Count your blessings because the more you focus on what you have, the more you will see how blessed you are and how much life has already given you. The more gratitude you practice, the more you will multiply your happiness and you will create a positive cycle in your life where you will be focusing on your blessings.
And *that* is the foundation of creating a life that you love.
