Do you want to feel happier (who doesn’t…?). Happiness seems to be one of those elusive things that people are always search in their lives. But happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s actually quite simple, and it’s within your reach. Here are 5 ways to being happier, no matter what is going on in your life.
Have you ever sat down and really thought about happiness – what it means to you? What it looks like? And how you can create it in your life?
Too often, we get sucked into society’s definition of happiness and how everyone ELSE defines happiness.
What I’ve realized when it comes to happiness is that it’s quite simple.
Happiness is easy to achieve, but it’s harder to maintain.
Because is a state of being. It’s about how you feel on a consistent basis, which is affected by what you choose to focus on.
Therefore happiness comes from within, and even though external factors can impact how you feel, until you feel content at your core, you will not be happy, no matter how many things you buy or how many goals you strive to achieve.
And keep in mind that happiness is like a wave, there are ups and downs. You can’t always be on a “high” and feel happy every single moment of every single day. It doesn’t work that way.
You can have a certain base level of contentment and happiness, while understanding that life always has ups and downs and it’s about what you choose to focus on that will determine your experience of life.
In other words, what you choose to think about and focus on, you will feel more of.
So the more you focus on the positive, on the learnings from your life experiences and the call moments, the more happiness you will cultivate, at a deeper level.
If you’re struggling to cultivate happiness, you’re not alone. This is something that most people struggle with.
Here are 5 ways you can be happier, no matter what is happening in your life.
Happiness Practice # 1 | Gratitude
I talked extensively about gratitude and with good reason.
Practicing daily gratitude (and yes, I mean daily…every morning I write 3 things that I’m grateful for and why) has the power to create a more inspiring and abundant mindset, which in turn will help you create a positive cycle where you will start noticing ALL the amazing blessings in your life.
By practicing gratitude, you will make yourself feel happier because you will be focusing on what you are already rather than on the things that are missing in your life.
And during challenging moments in your life, bringing yourself back into a state of gratitude will help alleviate the uncomfortable and sometimes painful emotions that could arise during a hardship.

Happiness Practice # 2 | Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the present moment, on tuning into your thoughts, emotions and your body to see how you’re feeling so that you can be aware of yourself and how you’re doing.
Mindfulness can be as easy as breathing deeply to help you bring yourself back in the present moment and focusing on the now.
By practicing mindfulness, you can cultivate more happiness because you will constantly bringing yourself back in the moment, which will help you realize how precious and important NOW is. That every moment is fleeting and that you can’t and shouldn’t always be living in the past or worried about the future, otherwise you will miss out on the present moment.
Happiness Practice # 3 | Finding joy in the moment
This can be a challenging one because some of you are probably wondering “How can I find joy if I’m cleaning my house or doing chores?!”.
My answer is that you CAN and you SHOULD!!!!
You must…MUST learn how to find joy in the moment, no matter what you’re doing or what you’re feeling, because “This too, shall pass.”
Chores and cleaning have to be done. Then why make the process harder by suffering through it and being miserable and grumpy about it?!
Life challenges happen, and they can be hard and painful. But try to find joy in moments, as you’re going through those challenging times. That means carving out some time for yourself to read your favourite book or exercising or seeing a friend.
Whatever brings you joy, do it.
This will cultivate a long-term sense of happiness because you will know that no matter what happens in life, you can handle it. You can manage it. Because you are always able to create moments of joy for yourself, no matter what.
Happiness Practice # 4 | Doing something creative
Do you want to feel happier? Then you must find a creative outlet.
Even if you feel like you’re not “good” at it (which… wtf does that even mean…? Art and creativity is subjective, it’s about how it makes you feel…), the point is to connect with your heart and do something that inspires you and ultimately, distracts you.
And doing something creative doesn’t have to mean painting a piece of art like Rembrandt or Picasso.
It can be anything that makes YOU feel like you’re being creative, like dancing around to loud music in your home, or baking a delicious treat for your family, or drawing, or taking an painting class….!
Whatever “creativity” means to you, do it. Trust me. It will absolutely cultivate more happiness in your life.
Happiness Practice # 5 | Spending time with people you care about
This is an obvious one but I still had to include it because…duh.
If you want to feel happier, no matter what, then you need to learn how to reach out to those you care about and to spend time with them.
I don’t mean that you need to rely on them for your happiness.
But we are social beings, which means that at the end of the day, we need to be surrounded and share our experiences and life with others to feel connected to ourselves and to others.
So if you’re going through a hard time, or even if you’re not, always make sure that you are spending time with people you care about so that you can feel happier, no matter what else might be happening in your life.
Happiness Practice # 6 | Doing a good deed
I feel like this one is under-estimated and under-used.
You NEED to be doing more good deeds for people around you because it will come back to you ten-fold.
And no, I’m not saying that you should be doing good deed just to get something in return. But I am saying that doing something for someone else will make you happier. Because the more you give, the more you receive.
The more generous you are with your time and energy, the more it will come back to you in different forms.

Try it out for yourself and do a nice gesture for a colleague or a friend or a family member and see how you feel when you see their reaction.
Keep in mind that not everyone will react the way you want them, and even though it can be hard, try not to have expectations fo what that reaction should be…just do it for the simple joy of doing something good for someone else.
